If you're looking for things to do near Big South Fork, you've picked one of the most underrated corners of Tennessee — 125,000 acres of gorges, trails, and genuine quiet, with a fraction of the crowds you'd fight in the Smokies. We host glamping domes minutes from the park, so this is the list we actually give our guests.
Hiking the trails
Big South Fork has over 170 miles of trail, from easy loops to all-day ridge walks. If you do three, do these:
- Angel Falls Overlook Loop — big gorge views for moderate effort, about 4 miles.
- Slave Falls Loop — a seasonal waterfall and a pretty creek, about 5 miles.
- Honey Creek Loop — the most technical day hike here, with ladders, stream crossings, and boulder scrambles. Worth every step.
The Bandy Creek area is the easiest hub to start from, with a visitor center and well-marked trailheads.
Horseback and OHV riding
Big South Fork has one of the best equestrian trail systems in the National Park System — bring your own horse or book a guided ride. For motors instead of hooves, the Brimstone Recreation area just outside the park boundary is a destination in its own right: thousands of acres of legal, maintained OHV trail for ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. It's a major reason groups book the area.
Water, fishing, and the pond
The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River is a designated Wild and Scenic River — good for paddling, float trips, and smallmouth fishing. If you'd rather not leave where you're staying, our domes sit on a fully stocked pond: guests regularly catch dinner and cook it on the Blackstone an hour later.
Stargazing
This is real dark-sky country. The plateau is remote enough that on a clear night the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye — and if you're staying in one of our domes, you can watch it through the skylight from bed.
Where to eat
Half the fun out here is eating local. Grab coffee from Gather Coffee in Oneida, fresh produce from R&J Produce, and eggs and dairy from the Big Red Barn. (Full rundown in our guide to where to eat near Big South Fork.)
Where to stay
Our geodesic domes are open now, minutes from the trailheads, with a stargazing skylight and that stocked pond out the door.
Stay Here — The Big Dome. Scott County’s only geodesic domes — a stargazing skylight overhead, a stocked pond, and the Big South Fork trails minutes away. Check availability.
Come for a weekend and you'll see why we stopped looking for somewhere louder. Then leave your phone in the other room.
